This question varies from state to state and many people wonder if it is legal to drive with a cracked windshield in Indiana.

In a nutshell, Indiana law does not mention whether cracks in your windshield are legal or illegal.

However, it does state that you may not drive with an obstructed view which can be interpreted as a cracked windshield.

No stickers, signs, posters or things of that nature are allowed to block your view while driving. This may also apply to a crack in your windshield that is in your line of site.

However, it may also depend on the cop who pulled you over and if he or she determines it as indeed ‘obstructing your clear view’ or not.

There are no quick rules to follow with determining if your cracked windshield would be legal or not. But a good rule of thumb would be if the damage obstructs your line of site, then it may be deemed illegal by a cop.

So, what should you do about a cracked windshield?

Long Cracks- If you have a long crack in your windshield (longer than a dollar bill) we recommend that you get a new windshield. If you try getting a long crack repaired, you will most likely be wasting your money.

To fix any windshield crack, resin must be inserted into both ends and then slowly meet in the middle. If the crack is too long, the resin won’t seal the crack properly and will crack out again sooner or later.

Small Windshield Cracks-If you have a small windshield crack (a couple of inches in length), we can fix it for you. And it’s a good idea to address it as soon as you see it. (Read ‘How to Stop a Windshield Crack from Spreading’)

If you leave it alone, it will eventually turn into a long crack which will result in the need for a new windshield. Even if it is not in your line of site now, it most likely will be in your line of site after it runs across your windshield.

Windshield Chips- All windshield cracks start from windshield chips. They can be caused from debris or small rocks hitting your windshield on a busy highway or just about anything small hitting your windshield with force.

Once the glass is penetrated, it has a good chance of cracking out into a long crack. We recommend getting your windshield chip fixed right away in order to save your windshield.
