Frequently Asked Questions About Renting a Car
If you’re wondering what are some of the most frequently asked questions about renting a car , you’re not alone.
We asked Brooke W., our expert in the car rental industry, these top questions and below are her answers:
1– How can i find the best rate for a rental car?
“Rates vary year round. You want to book a rental vehicle in a “non peak time”. Anywhere near school Spring Breaks and holidays are all terrible times to book, instead book in the slow periods in between holidays and breaks. I believe online through the company of your choice is the best way to book. Sometimes calling the stores does not work in your favor, because rental agents have the ability to fluctuate prices as they deem appropriate. (EX: If you call and stress that you need a minivan, the rental agent could add to the rate of the vehicle. Online sites will not be able to do that.)”
2- What should I do if I get a chip or crack in my windshield while I’m renting it?
“The best practice is to always give your rental car company a call. They are the professionals when it comes to what needs to be done with their assets. Most often, they have special pricing with places (oil changes, repairs, etc.) so there is no need to waste more money than necessary to try and “hide” something from them. There is a lot of stigma related to rental companies, but if you simply are honest, they will do their best to help you.”
3- What if I get into an accident while renting a car?
“Call your rental car company. This might be the first time you have had an accident in a rental, but I can assure you that you are not the first customer to have had an accident in a rental. The car company knows what needs to be done and they really do not want you driving an unsafe vehicle. So, it is best to let them know what has happened so that they can decide if they need to trade out vehicles for you or not. Also, be prepared for the fact that if you did not purchase additional insurance for the rental that you will need to get your insurance involved.”
4- What if I get some kind of comprehensive damage–ie, a tree falls on it, or I get hit in a hail storm?
“If you are renting a vehicle, that vehicle is yours while it is in your possession. Therefore, if comprehensive damage were to happen and you do not have any additional insurance through the rental car company, you will need to get your insurance involved, which is why I strongly suggest paying for additional insurance through the rental car company. It seems pricey at the time ranging from $5-$50 per day, depending on the car rental company, but the additional money may be a lot less than a hefty deductible, which is what you will pay if you damage a rental and have no insurance through the rental car company!”
5- Can i use a rental car to drive with Uber or Lyft?
“This is company specific. That question would need to be asked to the company. From my experience, it is not allowed at most major car rental companies.”
